Perhaps it is because we speak creole every day that we take the fancy names for granted. To a Non-Haitian person "Didi Sos Pwa" may sound a bit fancy.
Here are some dishes you may ask for if you walk into a Haitian Restaurant:
The main courses are meat platers:
- Griot (Gree Yo) - Fried Pork
- Tasot Cabrit (tah so kah breet) - Fried Goat
- Cabrit an sòs (kah breet an sauce) - Goat Sauce
- Tasot Bèf (tah so baef) - Fried Beef
- Lambi (Lambee) - Conch
- Poul Fri (Pool free) - Fried Chicken
- Poul an sòs (pool an sauce) - Chicken Sauce
- Fritay (free tai) - Fried plater with griot or tasot
- Legim (Leh Gheem) - Legume / Thick vegetable stew with meet
You can order these dishes with your choice of rice, fried plantains, or corn meal:
- Diri Sòs Pwa (deer reeh sauce pooh-a) - white rice ane bean sauce
- Diri Kole (deer reeh koh leigh) - Brown rice & beans cooked together
- Didi Djon Djon (deer reeh John John) - Rice & Black Muchrooms
- Diri Pwa Vèt (deer reeh pooh-a veit) - Rice with grean peas
- Mayi Moulin (mah yeeh moo len) - Corn meal
- Bannan peze (Bann ann peh zay) - Fried Plantains
Virtually every Haitian restaurant in Haiti or abroad will have these dishes on a daily basis. Try any one of them and you will fall in love.
